Mike Brennan | Fred Meyer

Mike was born in Boise, Idaho and was raised in a family with 9 siblings. He graduated from Boise State University with a degree in Business Management in 1984 and began his career with Roadway Express.

Mike began working with Fred Meyer in 1995 at the Puyallup Distribution Center. At that time, the warehouse served 36 Fred Meyer stores. Mike is now the Transportation Manager of the same FM Distribution Center which now serves 115 stores including Fred Meyer and QFC stores in Washington and Alaska. Fred Meyer is now part of the Kroger Company, which is the second largest general retailers in the U.S.. Mike’s transportation team in Puyallup has the highest load factor of all of the Kroger Company’s Distribution Centers.

Mike Lives in Federal Way where he and his wife of 32 years have raised five children. He enjoys coaching youth sports and has coached baseball, basketball, and speech team over the last 20 years.

Eric Johnson | Port of Tacoma

Eric Johnson was named the Port of Tacoma’s executive director in June 2019. He sets the organization’s vision in creating a new strategic plan for the Port.

He also serves on the boards of the Tacoma-Pierce County Chamber of Commerce and the Economic Development Board for Tacoma-Pierce County (EDB), as well as the EDB Executive Committee.

Prior to joining the Port of Tacoma, Johnson served as the executive director of the Washington Public Ports Association since January 2009. In that role, he represented port district interests to state and federal elected officials, including the Washington legislature and state agencies.

In addition to government relations, he was responsible for numerous specialized seminars and conferences. His duties also included advising Washington’s 75 port districts on issues relating to governance, operations, planning and strategy.

Johnson joined the Washington Public Ports Association in 1988 as the environmental affairs director, where he developed many of the fundamental environmental laws and policies that are still in place today for ports across the state. He was promoted to deputy director in 2006.

He is a native of Pierce County and holds a bachelor’s degree in biology and political science from Pacific Lutheran University. He also has a master’s in public administration with a concentration in environmental policy and natural resources management from the University of Washington.

Topic: West Seattle Bridge Project

Heather Marx
SDOT Program Director

Heather Marx has 25 years of experience in transportation, state and local government, and communications. Heather currently serves as the Program Director for the City’s West Seattle Bridge Safety Program. Following the public safety closure of the West Seattle Bridge, Heather was asked to lead the capital delivery, communications, and transportation management and mitigation efforts associated with the loss of SDOT’s most crucial transportation asset. In addition, Heather serves as Seattle Department of Transportation’s Director of Downtown Mobility, guiding SDOT’s approach to ensuring mobility for the traveling public through an unprecedented era of public and private development. The reconfiguration of State Route 99, the end of joint operations in the downtown transit tunnel, the advent of light rail expansion, and a robust development environment demand new ways of getting around. Previously she served as the interim director for the Street Use Division and managed SDOT’s Project and Construction Coordination Office (PCCO).

Prior to her work with the PCCO, she managed Seattle Major Projects at King County Metro Transit and served as the deputy director of SDOT’s Traffic Management division.

She lives in West Seattle with her husband, two sons and an overly affectionate bulldog.    

Lindsay Wolpa
Port of Seattle & NWSA

Lindsay Wolpa has been with the Port of Seattle since 2014, starting as the Policy Manager for the Port Commission. The following year, she moved to the External Relations group, shifting to the local governmental relations role, representing both Port of Seattle and Northwest Seaport Alliance interests with the City of Seattle, tribal governments and other regional agencies. Her responsibilities have since shifted to focus primarily on waterfront projects, working closely with the Port’s Community Engagement and Government Relations teams.

Prior to working for the Port, Lindsay was a public affairs consultant for a local firm and spent two years in Washington D.C. with the Glover Park Group. She began her career in U.S. Senator Maria Cantwell’s state office. Originally from the Boston area, Lindsay first moved to the Pacific Northwest to attend University of Washington as an undergraduate. She also received her M.P.A at the University of Washington’s Evans School of Public Policy and Governance.

Lindsay lives in West Seattle with her husband and their 11-month old son, Max.

Peter Friedmann | Agriculture Transportation Coalition

My predecessors on the Senate Merchant Marine Subcommittee went for the obvious – to careers in law firms representing mostly foreign ocean carriers; I had those offers too, but went the opposite direction, which no one had done previously, but where my heart was, and still is today — to represent those that supply the cargo, the farmers, ag processors, forest products.

Going the opposite way, to advocate for those that had no advocates when it came to international transportation, export supply chain, has proven so rewarding, and together with those agriculture exporters we have built something powerful and lasting in the AgTC. This work has earned the respect of carriers and ports for exporters, and awareness even in quarters not given to concerning itself with the agriculture in “the hinterland”. For example, after a century of existence, the New York Maritime Society’s Hall of Fame, for the first time ever, apparently recognized that there is indeed a country to the east of the Hudson River. While I was honored to be inducted, in my mind this was recognition of the importance of those who grow, harvest, process, handle, transport food and fiber for the world, those whom the Agriculture Transportation Coalition serves. It happened because of our AgTC members who live and work in places that the maritime crowd in New York City and New Jersey never heard of, but which form the core of the AgTC: Euphrata, Hermiston, Tangent, Vidalia, Shawnee Mission, Minot, Idaho Falls, Dakota Dunes, Olive Branch, Moses Lake, Greeley, Greenwood, Lubbock, Wenatchee, Cordova, — the list of the “hometowns” of agriculture exporters goes on.

What a privilege it is that the JOC has called the AgTC “the principle voice of agriculture exporters in US transportation policy”. Because I did not follow that well-worn path from the Senate Commerce Committee to a maritime law firm representing ocean carriers.

Steve Hartmann | Lynden Transport

Steve Hartmann is Vice President, Sales & Marketing for Lynden Transport, Inc., the original operating unit of the Lynden Family of Companies.  Steve joined Lynden in 2011 and has worked within the trucking industry for over 40 years.  Prior to Lynden, Steve spent most of his time within the regional domestic LTL markets with Oak harbor Freight Lines and Mid-States Express.

Since joining Lynden, Steve’s expertise has included a working knowledge of the domestic off-shore markets, with a heavy focus on Alaska.  Steve and his wife Rochelle are the parents of six children and 13 grandchildren. Steve is a graduate of Brigham Young university, where he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Economics.

He is a past Chairman and serves as the Chairman Ex-Officio of the National Motor Freight Traffic Association (NMFTA) headquartered in Alexandria, Virginia.  He is a past President and Chairman of the Pacific Inland Tariff Bureau located in Portland, Oregon.  He is a resident of Bonney Lake.

February 10th, 2020 Meeting: John Wolfe

John Wolfe | The Northwest Seaport Alliance

John Wolfe is chief executive officer of The Northwest Seaport Alliance (NWSA). He sets the organization’s vision and strategy, and guides the NWSA’s unique customer-focused culture.

Wolfe also served as the CEO of the Port of Tacoma, a position he held from 2010 to 2019. Before being named CEO, he had served as the Port of Tacoma’s deputy executive director since June 2005.

Prior to joining the Port of Tacoma, Wolfe served for two years as the executive director of the Port of Olympia, and before that as Olympia’s director of operations and marine terminal general manager.

Wolfe also spent 10 years with Maersk Sealand/APM Terminals in Tacoma, most recently as the terminal’s operations manager.

He is on the boards of the American Association of Port Authorities (AAPA), Executive Council for a Greater Tacoma, Tacoma-Pierce County Chamber of Commerce, the Washington State Fair Board, Federal Maritime Commission’s Export Innovation Team and Maritime Innovation Advisory Council for the Department of Commerce. Wolfe is also an executive board member of the Economic Development Board for Tacoma-Pierce County. Wolfe earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration from Pacific Lutheran University.

Brent Vander Pol | Washington Trucking Associations

Brent Vander Pol, currently serving a 2 year term as President of the Washington Trucking Associations, is President of Peninsula Truck Lines, Inc., a role he has held since 2015. Prior to that, he was VP of Operations for Peninsula Truck Lines, Inc. from 2002 to 2015. Brent has officially been with the Federal Way headquartered company since 1986.

Peninsula Truck Lines, Inc. is a family owned regional LTL carrier, started by Brent’s grandfather and 2 of his brothers in 1951. The company currently employs 500 people across 3 states.

Brent has been married to his wife Brenda for 40 years. Together they have two adult children, and four grandsons.

In his spare time, Brent enjoys time with his family on the water, and never misses an opportunity to golf.

Emergency Food Network – Working to End Hunger in Pierce County since 1982

 

Each December our club holds the Emergency Food Network Food Drive and Fundraiser at our Christmas luncheon. All proceeds from the event go to EFN who’ll use the proceeds to feed local people in our community. The event includes a visit from the local high school choir and speakers who bring in the Christmas spirit by helping auction off great gifts for the membership. Currently, EFN is able to convert every $1 raised into $12 worth of food.  Our membership is thrilled they can have such a huge impact in our community.

 

Since 1999, we have been able to raise over 1 million dollars in food for EFN. Come join us at our December luncheon where we’ll once again bring you a little Christmas joy and goodwill to the people in our community.
