2009 PERSON OF THE YEAR HUGH CARR VERSACOLD
The Transportation Club of Tacoma proudly announces the selection of Hugh Carr as our 2009 Person of the Year. We're honored to be able to recognize years of service to the Club by Hugh and the companies he's represented in our community.
Our Clubs motto is simple…“Promoting personal and professional growth within the local and transportation community since 1926.” While our recipient is happy to report that he was not around in 1926, we of the Board are proud to say that this individual has been a shining example of what our motto speaks to when we say “growth in the local and transportation community.”
Growing up in the town of Bellingham, he attended Whatcom Jr. High like many generations of his family before him. While at Bellingham High School and throughout college, he worked in Alaska which would be a catalyst for future positions throughout his career.
For college, he chose the path of his father before him and attended the University of Washington where he is said to be an extremely proud man of the PURPLE of Montlake. While there, he was enrolled in the Army ROTC which would eventually bring him to work at the Presidio in the Intelligence Corp.
His path in our industry has included Manager of Alaskan Operations for New England Fish Company, President and CEO of SCS Refrigerated Services and now most recently he’s starting up operations for Versacold in the Tacoma/Seattle area.
Hugh currently serves on the Board of Directors for the World Trade Organization of Tacoma and recently ended his term on the Board of Economic Development for Pierce County. In addition, he has served as membership in the: - NW Food Processors Assoc - NW Fisheries Assoc - American Frozen Foods Assoc AND - International Assoc of Refrigerated Warehouses
A frustrated golfer, like so many of us, he’s very active in the local community. Unknown to many of you, he’s been coaching CYO volleyball for St Louise School in Bellevue for close to 10 years. A few years back his wife mentioned that maybe he should leave coaching to younger dads. He took great pride in pointing out another coach, who was several years older than Hugh, was doing just fine…….point was made!
He loves to read, travel and spends lots of time in the garden.
Asked what describes him the best, his wife answered with one simple word….“family”. He has a son Michael(Husky) and a daughter Cindy(Cougar). His son then went onto marry a wonderful woman, Alice-Marie, but she too was a Cougar. As his wife puts it, the house is definitely divided during Apple Cup.
Hugh is a hands on grandfather of 5(3 girls and 2 boys) who spends most of his weekends at his grandchildren’s games and babysitting when needed. While we know that he does this with great pride, joy and of selflessness, we must wonder if a piece of him is not there to ensure the next generation becomes Huskies and not Cougars.
This year’s honoree has spent years of tireless dedication to his family, his community, our industry and our Club. What words can I use to describe what he’s meant to this organization and to many of us in this room? To answer that I must steal the words from his wife Ann and simply say that this years recipient is a great ambassador and mentor to the Transportation Club of Tacoma “family”.
